Off-Campus Survival Rules

If you live off-campus, chanced are when you leave your house in the morning you literally have to bring your entire life with you! In the morning, you pack everything necessary as if you are moving out of your house and you head to school (usually for the entire day).
So why not make it easier on yourself? Here's a list of tips to help you deal with the complexity and inconveniences of living away from campus.
1. Prioritize
We tend to overpack - literally. We overpack just in case. After all, you never know when an emergency might happen. So at night before bed, make a list of things you really need. You need your books, your lunch, computer (only if necessary), writing utensils and extra snacks, your bus pass, and your wallet. That covers your basics and leaves no extra stuff to add to the weight you have to carry.
An extra tip: if you are not expressly told to bring your textbook, don't bring it. They are massive and just not necessary!
2. Separate into different bags
Personally, I have two bags I carry to school. One is an over-the-shoulder, and the other is my book bag. This also helps distribute the weight. I use the over-the-shoulder for my computer, my lunch, and my water bottle, plus any small items I need like hand sanitizer, hand cream, and my wallet. I use my backpack solely for school books. This allows you to separate you weight and makes things much easier to carry!
3. Take the bus
Yes, that’s right. Take the bus. I live a ten minute walk away from campus, but some days you just need to take the bus. But, for those of you who cannot or do not have the option to walk, take the bus. You pay for a bus pass, so use it like your life depends on it! Even though the bus schedule is hard to read and understand, take the time sit down and know the times and where you're headed.
4. Always take the earlier bus
Speaking of buses! This will save you from the embarrassing walk into class late. Say you have class at 5:00 PM and you can take the 10N Carlisle to campus; catch the bus at 4:00 PM.  The bus will get to campus at 4:35 PM, so you have extra time to get yourself organized and prepared. I've made the mistake of catching the later bus many times - just avoid this situation as best as possible (and say good-bye to sleeping in).
5. Dress warmly
Yes, the bus is convenient, warm and fast. But sometimes it’s late. This time of year, you may find yourself standing out in the cold for a little longer then you expect. Always have good waterproof boots. I recommend wool-lined boots that can withstand -32°C weather. You can find boots like these at SoftMoc.
You'll also need a good jacket that can withstand the strong wind and the freezing temperatures. You will want a jacket that is extra-long and covers your back. Book bags tend to make your coats ride up, leaving your back exposed. You can find these at relatively good price at Walmart and will last you a couple of years. Of course, a scarf, hat, and mitts are necessary too. Do your best to avoid having your face over-exposed. Sometimes wrapping your face with an extra scarf can prevent that ice-cold cheek pain.
6. Pack a well-balanced meal
For this tip, I’ll just give you a recipe I would make to take with me for a long day on campus. This meal gives you protein and vitamins so you can deal with a long day on campus:
  • 1 cup of white rice (cooked)
  • 1 boneless/skinless chicken breast
  • 1 cup of frozen vegetables
  • 1 ½ tbsp. of teriyaki sauce (or sauce of your choice)
Directions:
Cook the chicken and rice separately. Cook veggies in the microwave and combine with the chicken once it’s cooked. Add rice and sauce.
Some snack suggestions: an apple (with some peanut butter for extra protein), two granola bars (one for now, one for later), a dessert (perhaps a cookie), and a refillable water bottle. Finally, make sure you carry some cash on you in case you need a little something extra!

Taco Salad Fun!!

So I am posting this moblily so please bear with me typo wise!

I am in the process of moving back into the city for my third year of university. And surprisingly that happened quicker then I would have liked.

Summer flew by! A cliche I know, but true notheless.

So in my past time I have been cooking up some new and some personal favourite recipe. I have been, for the most part, preparing recipes has been a challenge. Recently, I committed myself to accepting the challenge and keeping myself occupied in the short days I have left in my parents home! Today, I made a very simple recipe for taco salad.

To make the taco salad, you need fresh ingredients.
1 pckge of lean ground beef
1 pckge of Taco Seasoning (you can use Old Elpaso, or Taco Bell, I like both!)
1 large tomato (chopped)
1 1/2 heads of Romane lettuce (sliced or chopped)
2 cups of shredded cheese
1 bag of Tositios tortilla chips (crushed)

1. You in a medium frying pan, cook lean ground beef on med heat, until almost fully cooked. Then add your taco season and fry for another 2-3 minutes until most of season has been absorbed.

2. In a large bowl, combine lettuce, tortilla chips, chopped tomatoes, cheese and hamburger.

3. You will need at this point to make your dressing. (Which I will tell you about below)

4. Make sure you mix these ingredients together well.

Dressing time!

3 tablespoons of Dijon mustard
3 tablespoons of vingear
2 tablespoons of honey mustard flavour (basically just a added flavour)
1/2 teaspoon of salt and pepper
1/2 cup of vegetable oil.

1. You will need to wisk together the Dijon mustard and vingear.
2. Add your salt and pepper
3. Combine & wisk your vegetable oil slowly.
4. Add the honey mustard, wisking until dressing is semi-thick

You will then need to add the dressing to the salad.

Finally, you add salsa and sour cream when you serve!

A day in the life of

My days aren't too exciting. I work each day as a house-cleaner as a favour to family.

However, here was my most interesting day thus far! (not as great as it sounds)

10:00 a.m. Made/ate breakfast

I do recommend Natural Selection bacon! I was skeptical of it at first, but gluten free all natural bacon is pretty damn delicious. And less fatty!

1:09 p.m. Took my precious pup Champ for a walk

It was a lovely plus fourteen degrees here at home. And Champ and I couldn't have enjoyed the walk more.

5:00 p.m. My package from Lush Cosmetics arrived! With a free sample.

I was so excited to receive this today via UPS! I don't live near any Lush store. So I had to order my bottle. And, they gave my a sample of another product they sell, I will definitely be able to order from them again!

5:10 p.m. I had a marvelous supper! Chinese inspired, of course.

I don't have too fancy of a life. But I do enjoy getting things in the mail, and especially stuff from my favorite cosmetics company!

Summer time!

The fall and winter are filled with endless hours of homework and work. Where you read books you don't necessarily like, usually textbooks. Writing huge 10 page essays that usually don't even make sense to author.

Now the summer, on the other hand...

Is filled with consuming huge amounts of food, experimenting with new food, and binge-ing on different tv shows. I've currently hit three! Grey's Anatomy, Game of Thrones, and Nashville.

Samosas from the Saturday Market in my town. These are medium lamb, I recommend trying medium lamb samosas from anywhere.

I recently baked homemade peanut butter cookies. Unfortunately I don't do enough baking. So this summer to occupy my time I will bake more.

Now binge-ing on television is just a whole other topic. Grey's Anatomy is coming to close. Christina Yang is leaving (nooooooo!), so, every episode I'm kind of on the edge.

Game of Thrones, well, once you see it, you can't unsee it.

Nashville gives me that soap opera drama-esk thing I'm looking for. Keeps me in the loop! Cheating, the music industry, fraud all the lovely stuff people are enthused to watch on a daily basis.

Lastly, the most important thing about the summer is being able on our free to spend time with my boyfriend Lenny! I spent this weekend with him and it was the best weekend I've had in a long time!

This ones about food

I'm in the process of renaming my blog. Bare with me!

I've discovered that every odd time I have cravings for certain things. This time it's Caesar salad and any sort of ice cream.

Obsessed with DQ's red velvet blizzard.

Or any ice cream for that matter.

Bulk Barn is a luxury. I travel there to see all the lovely things I would like to cook/bake/fry. And of course get all the candy.

Starbucks has been another luxury of mine. And Oat Fudge Bars are something I really need to learn to make. As soon as I find a recipe I will post it.

I also made a worthy purchase of a "Wreck This Journal" I've already done a couple pages of it. And, GOODNESS LET ME TELL YOU ABOUT THE STRESS RELIEF.

And after I destroyed the pages, I found a place to have a nap.

Surprise Date Night!

Leonard and I don't do dates very often. Mostly because we're poor university students and it's wiser on our part to just stay in and watch movie and make snacks.

But, tonight was a different night. We went out!

We went to my favourite Chinese restaurant in the city.

Cute little lay out. After we sat and placed our order with a great waitress. We devoured some wonton soup.

They have probably my favourite wonton soup around. And yes, I was a little messy when I ate. But, if you admit you aren't messy when you eat soup, then you're a liar.

We order our main dish after that!

We both ordered the same combination plate. Because we're in love. (oh that was gross, haha)

Approval by Lenny! He thoroughly enjoyed his meal.

As did I mine, as you can see from the lack of food on my plate!

The night was a complete surprise. We weren't planning on going out to eat, but, that was the best part of it all. And we had a great time. I love you, Leonard.

Have you had a surprise date night? What was it like?

My personal favourite thing: food!

I hope everyone's holidays were as enjoyable as mine. I got lots of things this Christmas, which makes me thankful.

Christmas is filled with all kinds of things. My personal favorite thing: food!

We set up our Christmas tree a little late this year, mostly because my parents like to wait for me to come home, and because I had work, I was home a closer to Christmas. But my tree was huge.

My dog likes to have his butt in all my photos. He thinks he is photogenic.

We also did some baking, though, I believe two of our cheese cakes didn't turn out, we did have one successful cheese cake. And, it's cherry my favorite.

And because I'm classy, and always do things backwards, it's the French side.

I got some new clothes, which I love. My mother embraces my weird hipster ways. She got me some great tops, and these high-waist-ed vintage looking jeans. I was pretty impressed with her clothes choices.

Christmas day was great, and if I do say so myself, I look great!

I visited both my parents grandparents. They each had huge suppers. Like huge turkey suppers. Not that I'm complaining! I finished my visits with a Richards White, surrounded by family.

It was really great beer. I was impressed.

The rest of the night was spent in my pajamas that I got for Christmas watching 2 Broke Girls, one of my newest television obsessions. Speaking of, I should get back to finishing off the second season.

Happy Holidays,
~ N

HEY A BUTTERBALL COUPON, WHO DOESN'T LOVE BUTTERBALL?

I figured a slightly entertaining thing to post would be about the odd things I like to buy when I go grocery shopping.

Things like pizza pockets. Highly unhealthy for you, but just satisfying enough to buy them for 1.99!

I enjoy eggs as well, eggs, something I could probably procure myself are extremely expensive. Like over 3 dollars a cartoon. Luckily, this cartoon was small, filled with omega three and under three dollars. Boo-yeah!

Jones soda! One of the greatest things I've ever discovered. This kind is green apple soda, I prefer pomegranate soda. But this was my choice for this shopping trip. Also, pomegranate soda has no sugar in it. Plus for the diabetic!

Rice, well, instant rice is an addiction of mine. I like to make it with salmon, or Indian butter chicken, or over hamburger helper (soon to be aired in this post).

I have an addiction to box potatoes. Ever since I started university, regular non-box potatoes have been hard to purchase. Not enough demand to cook them, too expensive to buy them, so for the last two years, I've been living off box potatoes. Unhealthy but good, and HEY A BUTTERBALL COUPON WHO DOESNT LOVE BUTTERBALL?

Dill pickle, Philadelphia dip is the best thing ever. End of story.

And lastly, my addiction to Hamburger Helper, ever since I was a kid at home I would look forward to the days my mother would make Hamburger Helper for supper. So, now, when hamburger is on sale* I get some and a couple of boxes of my favorite flavour and I enjoy it like I am a kid again. Mm.

So that's a sneak peek into my weird food habits.

Lets just say I locked this place tight.

Though my school week hasn't officially started I have been quite busy. My official move in day was Sunday, and that was a rough night. I spent in my apartment alone, as all other three roommates were either gone or not moved in.

Lets just say I locked this place tight.

For an entire weekend my room was a pile of boxes and a new mattress that laid in plastic over the boxes. So messy was a good word. When I finally arrived on Sunday after noon, I started to unload a very large amount of stuff. Like literally, I have too much stuff.

My room has finally started to come together. Posters and paintings included.

After a few days of spending time alone in the new apartment. I was reunited with my very close friends.

Vanessa, Kaden and Emma! It's been four months since we've seen each other.

We spent the day running around looking for an open liquor store for a ceremonial bottle of wine - and grocery store to stock up on food for homemade enchiladas. Which where delicious, I might add.

And today, which happens to be Tuesday, my best friend Lindsay is returning to the city. She lives not far from my apartment. And this year we are hoping to go on many adventures throughout the city. Lindsay's birthday is tomorrow and we'll be having a home cooked meal at my place. After she has a dazzling day with friends.

So be watching for your introduction to Lindsay!

Good luck to all people returning to school this year!
